James Fort is a historic coastal fortification situated in the Jamestown district of Accra, Ghana. It was established by the British Royal African Company in 1673 as a trading post for gold and ivory before rapidly evolving into a major strategic outpost for the transatlantic slave trade. The fort gave its name to the surrounding town of Jamestown, which grew as a commercial hub alongside the Dutch-controlled Usshertown. Following the abolition of the slave trade, the building was repurposed by the British colonial government and later by post-independence Ghanaian authorities as a maximum-security prison. It retained this penitentiary function for over a century until it was finally decommissioned in 2008, and it is now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site representing Ghana's painful colonial history.
