The Palmeraie of Marrakesh is a popular palm oasis situated along the northern edge of the city limits in Marrakesh, Morocco. It spans an incredible 140 square kilometers (about 54 square miles) and is home to more than 100,000 date palm trees, as well as thriving olive and fruit orchards. The oasis was originally established in the 12th century by the Almoravid Sultan Ali ibn Yusuf, who utilized a brilliant network of underground irrigation channels (khettaras) to transform the dry plains into a lush agricultural engine. Today, while still preserving its ancient roots, the Palmeraie has evolved into an ultra-exclusive resort district, with luxury villas, championship golf courses, and high-end eco-tourism resorts.

Why You Should Visit

Visiting the Palmeraie offers a thrilling, wide-open outdoor adventure that allows you to experience iconic Moroccan activities—whether it’s taking a peaceful, traditional sunset camel ride dressed in nomadic robes or quad biking along rugged desert tracks.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the Palmeraie from the center of Marrakesh?

The oasis sits roughly 8 to 10 kilometers north of the central medina. Because it is located well outside the city core, you will need to take a 15-to-20-minute taxi ride, book a tour that includes hotel pickup, or arrange a scenic horse-drawn carriage ride from Jemaa el-Fnaa.

Is there an admission fee to enter the Palmeraie?

No. The Palmeraie is a vast, open-air geographic district rather than an enclosed park, making it completely free of charge to drive or walk through. However, individual activities like camel rides, quad rentals, and museum entries carry separate costs.

Can I visit the area independently without a tour?

While you can easily take a taxi to a luxury resort or a golf course within the zone, exploring the deep dirt tracks and palm paths independently can be confusing due to a lack of signs. Joining a guided excursion is highly recommended for safety and navigation.
